Ron Kay

Ron will be offering several tours for Southern Utah Scenic Tours in Fall 2007. Please visit Ron's tour page for details and dates.

Ron was born and raised in Utah; his love for the outdoors was instilled upon him from an early age when his parents would encourage him to pursue his interest in nature. Ron's grandfather was one of the last original mountain men, trapping animals for their pelts.  As a young boy Ron spent a lot of his time trapping with his grandfather. During this time he lived in the mountains of Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana running trap lines. He spent a lot of time in the mountains alone as he worked in specific trapping areas and began to understand the natural balance in nature as well as the behavior of animals. Ron also met and stayed with many different Native American tribes during this time, learning about their customs, art, and religious beliefs. Ron continued his love for the outdoors throughout his life and pursued many different avenues that would allow him to work with and study natural sciences. Ron has studied the geology, flora, fauna, human and natural history of this area for more than thirty years, and still maintains a passion for the unique environment of the desert. Ron is a published author and is currently working on several new books regarding the desert southwest and the Colorado Plateau.

Ron currently works for Zion National Park as a park ranger providing programs to visitors on the geology, flora and fauna, and human history of the desert southwest.  Ron also teaches for the Elderhostel program at Dixie State College in addition to offering numerous classes for the general public through the Zion Canyon Field Institute and as a guest lecturer. Geologists, biologists, and naturalists from around the world seek Ron's recognized expertise in these fields. The Discovery Channel has featured Ron and his expertise as part of their desert southwest programs. Ron is also an accomplished photographer and has been photographing the animals, plants, and scenery of the desert for many years. Ron has spent most of his life in this area and has a real passion for the desert. Ron is also an artist: his art pieces are derived from his extensive association with the Native Americans. His works can be found in many prominent collections and he has been featured in Southwest Art magazine.
